Out of a Crisis, Now What?

Navigating life after a crisis can be challenging. When we are in a crisis our bodies, minds are souls are focused on “surviving” the event. We often forget about recovery from the crisis. Some common examples of crises discussed in therapy are trauma (many forms of abuse, being a victim or witnessing trauma), break-up, divorce, losing a job, adjusting to a life transition, grief, etc.

During the recovery period usually, the crisis has been stabilized and a person can use this time for connect back to oneself. With this connection one can begin learning patterns that may have led to this recent crisis. Also, this can be a great time for changing unhealthy behaviors that may have created the crisis. Therapy can help explore self-destructive behaviors and help one move towards healthier actions. Starting therapy at this time can help gain better coping skills and help you prevent another crisis. This can be a time for growth and reflection as you are able to heal and move past that crisis event.

Here are some simple steps to consider when you are in recovering from a crisis

  1. Give yourself time to rediscover yourself

  2. Allow safe people in your life to support you (emotionally, with time , attention,… etc)

  3. You may want to add new people in to your support system

  4. Great time to start journaling, meditating, prayer, time in nature ( any activity that encourages you to pause and reflect)

  5. One of the best time also to seek therapy and counseling

Moreover, after a crisis there often needs to be time for re-discovering our sense of self again and possibly creating a better self.  This can also be an appropriate time to reconnected with positive relationships that and have been neglected during the crisis.
