What Is Generational Trauma?

Generational trauma is the emotional pain and stress that gets passed down from parents and grandparents to their children. This happens when earlier generations have gone through difficult events—like war, poverty, forced migration and the effects show up in family behaviors, beliefs, or ways of coping. For many Latina families, the trauma often starts with stories of migration, facing discrimination, or struggling to survive in a new country.

Immigration Stories and Survival Mode

Many Latina families have powerful stories about immigration. Parents and grandparents may have left everything behind for safety, a better job, or the hope of a brighter future. Often, this means living in “survival mode,” where the main goal is to get by and take care of loved ones in tough circumstances. Even when things get easier, children can still feel the pressure inherited from those survival tactics—like needing to stay alert, worrying about stability, or feeling that life is always a challenge. These feelings, while helpful in the past, can create stress and anxiety for new generations who might not face the same dangers but still carry that emotional burden.

Identity Struggles Among First-Generation Women

First-generation Latina women often feel caught between two worlds: the traditions( like marianismo) and values of their family, and the expectations of American society. This can make it hard to know who you are or where you belong. Many women want to honor their roots, but also dream of finding their own path, which can sometimes go against family expectations or old survival habits. This push and pull can bring feelings of guilt, confusion, or loneliness, especially when messages about success or acceptance from the outside world clash with those at home. Facing these identity struggles—and talking about them is an important step toward healing and feeling empowered.
