Therapy as Self-Love

Therapy can be part of your self-care and self-love. Therapy could help you with self-love by helping you understand the different parts that make you. At times it is challenging to accept our whole selves. For example, when it comes to our shortcomings, traumas, mistakes of the past and other parts that we rather avoid. There are usually areas we still must heal and grow from. Even though therapy can be difficult at times as it forces you to look at yourself; it can also lead to more self-love and acceptance over time as. As one accepts challenging aspects of our lives usually self-compassion and self-love grows.

Therapy encourages one to start thinking about oneself. Just by making an appointment you are scheduling an hour just for you. This may seem like a very small step, but when we think about our busy days and lives, having one hour just for you and your well-being is a huge step towards self-care. Furthermore, having these weekly appointments can continue to reinforce self-care over time. Even after you end therapy you may still want to take that one hour for your self-care. Therapy is not meant to be forever.  Having to make this commitment of a weekly hour for self-care really forces a lot of people to advocate for themselves. Either by having to take a break from work for an hour or having to take a break from childcare or other tasks in our busy lives.

Another way that therapy is self-love. Is that you can choose to focus on your own goals. In your own growth or healing.  For most of us, especially women go around thinking about others first. Thinking about what others need and engaging in a lot of emotional labor. Therapy is a way of self-care and self-love by focusing back on our selves and on our needs.

Moreover, therapy often increases self-love as one becomes more confident in our ability to overcome and heal from painful events. Therapy can help you gain tools to better manage anxiety, depression and trauma. Once you can better manage these emotions confidence usually grows. No one can build your own self-confidence but you and this can happen in therapy over time.
