Breaking Down Memories with EMDR Therapy

Have you ever wondered how EMDR therapy helps you process memories? In this blog we discuss five main parts of memories and how we break down memories in therapy. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing ) therapy has been around since the 1980’s and many studies have shown success in decreasing PTSD symptoms by 68% after three 90-minute sessions (Wilson et al., 1995,1997). Moreover, another study found that EMDR therapy to be superior compared to Prozac in effectiveness in treating PTSD as patients saw benefits even after ending EMDR Therapy compared to Prozac. Patients in this study became symptomatic again after stopping Prozac (Van der Kolk et. Al, 2007) while EMDR therapy group continued to show progress even after ending therapy.  EMDR can help a person target traumatic memories and process these memories in an “adaptive way” versus a maladaptive or unhealthy way. During EMDR we usually choose a target memory. In this target memory we break down the memory by processing

1.        Sensory Input (images, sounds, smells, tastes, touch)

2.        Thoughts

3.        Emotions

4.        Body Sensations

5.        Beliefs (about oneself or the world)

( EMDR EMDRIA Training Manual, 2021)

In EMDR therapy sessions these five components of the memory are addressed and with the help of a therapist processed. EMDR uses BLS (Bilateral Stimulation) which can be eye movements, sounds or tactile movements. Therapist and patient decide the best mode for each person. EMDR therapy model is very structured which is helpful for most people with history of trauma as they feel more contained and know what to expect from the sessions. Also, EMDR therapy model helps people first have solid foundation coping skills they can use to self-soothe and cope with Anxiety and PTSD symptoms they may be struggling with. Having these initial coping skills in place also helps a person feel more confident that they can manage their symptoms and go deeper in processing trauma.
