3 Common Treatments for Trauma

There are many therapy treatments for trauma symptoms. However, I have found that these 3 treatments are very effective in treating and managing trauma symptoms such as Restlessness, Sleep Issues, Hypervigilance and Emotional Detachment.

1.     Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT): In TFCBT the goal is to identify traumatic event, process thoughts and emotions about the trauma. Then identify helpful ways to deal with trauma moving forwards. In TFCBT one goal is to learn how thoughts, feelings and actions are connected.  TFCBT also focuses on negative distortions (negative /unhelpful thoughts) and how to challenges these thoughts.

2.     Eye Movement Desensitization and Repossessing (EMDR) Therapy:  Focuses on reprocessing trauma via eye movement/tactile/audio stimulation. With EMDR the goal is to process memories that may have been inadequately processed or “maladaptive stored”. With EMDR triggers are identified and new ways of coping with past traumas.

3.     Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Aims to help with skill building of coping skills to better manage symptoms of trauma such as anxiety and emotional dysregulation.  DBT focuses on distress tolerance (helping a person better tolerate stress) using healthier coping skills such as the five senses. Doing DBT may be a helpful first step in learning to better manage emotions.
