You know the drill. Anxious? Overwhelmed? Can't stop thinking about something?

Ponte a limpiar“ our Moms would usually say to us growing up.

For a lot of us, cleaning has been the go-to move for as long as we can remember. Maybe you learned it from your mamá, your abuela, or just picked it up because it was the one thing that made you feel a little better when everything else felt like too much. You scrub the kitchen, reorganize the closet, mop the floors at 11pm — and for a while, it works. Your hands are busy, your house looks good, and your mind gets a break.

But lately, it's not landing the same way. You clean and the anxiety is still there when you're done. The burnout doesn't lift. The heaviness doesn't move. And if that's where you're at right now, I want you to know you're not doing it wrong. You just might be ready for something more.

Here's why limpiar may have stopped doing the job — and what it actually means

Coping skills can expire

The things that worked for you at 19 don't always work the same way at 29 or 39. Life gets more complex — more responsibilities, more relationships, more history stacking up — and the coping skills that used to be enough sometimes just... aren't. That's not failure. That's growth asking for an upgrade in your coping skills. To learn more about finding your unique coping skills click here

Cleaning is a distraction, not a solution

Let's be honest — limpiar does work, in the moment. It gives your nervous system something to focus on besides the anxious thoughts or the heaviness in your chest. But a distraction and a solution are two different things. Anxiety, burnout, and trauma have roots. Cleaning can quiet the noise for an afternoon; it can't get underneath it to where the real work needs to happen. EMDR Therapy can help you get to the real root of anxiety, burnout and trauma.

It may have been one of the only options you had

For a lot of Latina women, limpiar wasn't just a preference — it was one of the few culturally acceptable ways to cope. Therapy wasn't always accessible, affordable, or even talked about in our families. Rest wasn't really an option either. So, we cleaned, organize or made ourselves look busy. We kept our hands busy and called it self-care because, in a lot of ways, it was the best tool available at the time. To learn more about self-care for trauma survivors click here. That doesn't mean it's the only tool that should be available to you now.

You deserve coping skills built for you

Not generic advice. Not "just breathe" tips that don't account for your history, your culture, or what you've actually been carrying. You deserve support that understands where you come from and helps you build strengths that are specifically yours.

So what now?

If limpiar isn't cutting it anymore, that's not a sign something's wrong with you — it's a sign you're ready to go deeper. Therapy, including EMDR Therapy, can help you get to the root of what's really going on and build coping tools that actually hold up long-term. EMDR therapy has been proved effective in healing from trauma and managing anxiety symptoms.
